MATHBONE JOURNAL

How do you choose a starting level?

Age offers a guide; prior knowledge and readiness make the conversation more useful.

Foundations and learning approach

Notice independent understanding

Try a familiar task and notice what your child can do independently and where they need a picture, a hint or help reading. Keep an example to discuss with the team.

Look at topics, not just level names

MathBone has 15 levels from Pre Level to Level 14, covering early number ideas through advanced mathematics. Compare the topic descriptions with previous learning without treating age as a fixed rule.

A discussion example: how does the learner connect counters with 8 + 5 = 10 + 3? This is an illustration for conversation, not a placement test.

Prepare questions before enrolling

Share age, school year, goals and areas needing support. Ask about level selection, schedules, fees and actual session counts. Website Math Lab activities are examples, not placement tests.

Keep exploring together

Choose activities that match the learner’s knowledge and readiness, and discuss what you notice. Explore the curriculum or parent guide below.
