Where should a ruler measurement begin?

Length is a distance, not just the number beside an object’s end.

Compare before measuring

Line up one end of two pencils and compare their lengths. A shared starting point makes the comparison meaningful.

Read the distance between endpoints

Place a pencil at the ruler’s zero mark and read the other end. If it begins at two and ends at nine, the distance is seven units, not nine.

The object starts at 2 and ends at 9. Its length is the distance between the marks: 7 cm.

Check the unit

Include the unit, such as centimetres. Estimate before measuring, then compare the measured length with the estimate.
